Do You Know If All Dogs Can Swim?

Well ... No, not all dogs can swim

Every year we find sad news that people drown trying to rescue his dog. In many cases are accidents, prevention difficult, but other errors that are paid are very expensive, and is much we believe it or not, not all dogs like water and all swimmers. That all dogs can swim is a deep-rooted belief, which can be dangerous. Not all dogs can swim, not everyone can do it with the same skill and / or safety in some complicated circumstances (such as a single river).

Dogs that swim better ... and worse

As always depend on the individual, their experiences and their way of life, but if we talk about "water dogs", we can say without fear of being wrong too much to Newfoundland, Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever are the three kings of the aquatic environment (and the same reasons, the most widely used in water rescue).

But there are also dogs who swim really bad, which we can only enjoy the hot allow in very safe and simple. Braiquicefalos Dogs in general (English bulldog, French bulldog, pug, shih tzu ...) are usually not exactly good swimmers. And the dogs would be the second group of dogs that are not great swimmers.

Some precautions ...

Good weather, heat, beaches, rivers or reservoirs ... "Throw the ball and you could swim" is the phrase repeated and dangerous. Even with dogs that swim, we should be very careful if there are currents, obstacles or any situation that does not allow quick and easy access to the shore. The pools are just as dangerous if there is no ladder "work", but even so, we should show the dog the "way out" for you to be perfectly localized and generalized wherever you are in the pool. Have you viso pools fenced to prevent the entry of children? As with dogs should be exactly the same, and never leave them unattended, even though it be races "yes swim".

If we comply with the minimum precautions, swimming becomes the best way to exercise, especially in older dogs or joint problems (avoiding the impact on joints that occurs when running). Dogs easily gain muscle mass swimming, and that stands for joint health.

Dogs Children: Our Dogs See Us As If We Were Their Parents?

As social animals , dogs have an innate need to form strong bonds with others of the same species. However, when pets have also developed the need to form strong bonds with humans.

Scientists at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna ( Vienna Vetmeduni ) studied the type of bond that dogs are to humans , based on attachment theory . Their results suggest that the links are dogs with their humans could be very similar in principle to the links that make young children with their parents.

Attachment theory suggests that the strong link of babies to their parents is an evolutionary adaptation that protects infants, and that attachment makes them often look to their parents or caregivers. Vienna Vetmeduni scientists suggest that dogs have developed a similar adaptation along its evolution , by which not only can stick to their conspecifics , but also to humans. This would have helped much , since most dogs live as pets or in some kind of dependency towards people .

During the research , scientists evaluated particularly what is known as a secure base effect , which is one component of attachment theory that says that the caregiver or parent provides a secure base for the child to explore the world with confidence. In the case of dogs, the base securely provide the owner or keeper of the dog.

Through several experiments, concluded that dogs are indeed dependent on the security provided by their owners or caretakers to confidently explore their environment. When caregivers or owners were not , dogs were more reluctant to explore and even to take food that was in the place. This even if there were other people in the place .

This research says a lot about the differences between dogs and wolves (which are only strong links between them) and the collaborative evolution of dog and man . Besides being a starting point for further studies on the evolution of dog behavior can result in applied studies about how to approach unfamiliar dogs making them feel safe (useful eg for trainers and veterinarians ) .

However, there are aspects to be assessed in the future. For example, if the link - man dog there are different types of addiction as found the child - parent relationship ( secure attachment , insecure attachment or avoidant and ambivalent attachment ).

Different jobs they perform dogs

Normally we might think that dogs do not work. In fact, most dogs do not have jobs, but there are others that meet at different times with human tasks and that only they can perform these tasks, and we want to show you some of the major works that can develop in dogs worldwide.

Clearly, more work is common in the guide dogs. The truth is that guide dogs became popular back in the First World War and since then have always been present in the lives of people, helping the disabled, and even working as pilots for people with different problems.

Just as we mentioned above, also therapy dogs are very common throughout the world. There are also dogs that act as gatekeepers in the fields, commonly called "grazing", and of course, if you've been paying attention to the films you've probably noticed that there are many dogs that are spectacular actors.

Unfortunately, there are also jobs that dog lovers would not like to not have to meet in order not to endanger their lives, as in the case of fighting dogs, which are usually used to detect bombs thanks to its smell. In the same way normal rescue dogs, especially after accidents or natural disasters.

Then some other work can also develop dogs have to do with being detectives, be used for hunting and tracking, sled also like animals, especially in the areas dominated by cold and races from which "woolly". Finally, it is clear that of all the jobs, to be the best friends of all of us, human beings, which is the best ever met.

Costumes For Dogs: When Dress Or Not Our Pet

Not without some controversy, fashion dress up our pets in specific festivities becomes established and steadily spreading among whom we share our lives with a pet . There are some issues to consider when deciding to turn an animal into a celebrity , a superhero ... or a pumpkin. The first , and fundamental , is to know well : whether the clothes you 're wearing bothers you or if instead you feel comfortable and dress. There are species that are not made to wear the image and likeness of humans , and others are but neither can live with it. And of those , there are breeds that tolerate ( and even thank ) have some layer of protection against inclement weather, while others can not even see . It is therefore vitally important to understand that the first rule to play dress up with our pet happens to respect the animal that lives with us, keep your dignity intact and make sure we are not going to cause unnecessary suffering .

If you do not want, do not want

Mostly , accepted dogs better than cats and other pets that your own disguise them . But still, you have to assume that if your pet does not like the idea , we dismiss it altogether. Otherwise, it could cause an episode of stress with many possibilities lead to a violent gesture on your part to us or anyone that got in ahead .

Beware of the kind of disguise

The times when a pet requires one more layer of clothing are rare and are largely confined to very specific breeds , whether from latitudes with very different temperatures , or low ( or no ) hair . But in any case , is not natural to them (as it is on us ) so if you 're going to dress it up , make sure not to wear too tight clothes for dog for that, especially if you pressed the neck could end up suffocating him . Similarly, we have to look soft materials , ensuring a natural movement of legs and tail to prevent further stress. And finally , do not disguise it with thick clothes if hot ( heat stroke are terrible for dogs ) , not particularly uncomfortable materials : for example, those that generate lint that may slip through your eyes, nose or mouth.

In short, we must use common sense : look for the comfort of our pet clothes that say, study their behavior (if the try out , if she gets nervous ... ) once disguised to ensure that we are not hurting more than necessary . And if necessary , dismiss the idea .

Even with the approval of the dog,not lower our guard ! A disguised animal draws much attention . You can attract more of a curious , and this can be heavy , generating a new episode of unnecessary stress for your pet . I said: head first.

Dogs in Ancient Egypt

We all know the love of animals to be had in ancient Egypt , including the dogs .

Niches abound funerary paintings , artwork and writings that reveal how people in all walks of protected and loved dogs , whom they regarded as one of the family.

From the tombs of Maihergei , in the Valley of the Kings , were unearthed painted leather dog collars pink, green and white with metal fixtures as jumping horses ( those you could see in the Cairo Museum , where they are exposed ) .

" Great honors were paid to the dog ," wrote Plutarch ( Greek biographer and philosopher 46-120 BC) who testified that the death of a pet produced great distress . " The members of the family shaved their body and head in order to soothe your pain."
Preparations for the dog's death were very similar to the deaths of humans. In the moneyed classes , the pomp was greater.

A papyrus of the Old Kingdom (2680-2180 BC) certifies that a dog named Abutin (meaning pointy ears ) was much loved by its owner Pharaoh who ordered the death of his sarcophagus animal that became part of royal treasury , and embalm it with incense inhumaran you to take then to the grave to honor him like a nobleman of the court is involved.

The lives of pets for those times were full of attention and care , received the best food, were bathed and brushed and had pet names that included the word abu ( revered , beloved father), ubis ( protector) or hhi ( mine) .

Archaeologists have translated almost eighty dogs names . Some are a representative of the personality trait of the animal or refer to the work they performed or the talent they had, as a faithful , good shepherd ... Other physical characteristics or fur and war dogs used to have by name a number, the second the Third ... but differed in the battle for his daring and courage were added after a nickname , Middle Courageous, by way of example .

There was also sarcastic names and with a certain grace , like crazy , lazy ...

But all was not idyllic in this land of pharaohs , had dogs that were despised , for that submission and docility characteristic of the species .

The streets of Luxor and Memphis , crowded with garbage why stray or lost dogs roamed in search of food . The laws prevented beggars bother the dogs and cats . With such poor hygiene protection and you can imagine the packs circulating in these cities. What precipitated chelates anger came to "Empire" but far from intimidating the people, paradoxically , used them as guardians. The police had the market , nobles , temples ...

Figures and realize murals dog breeds at the time, not only the foreign but also imported . Some graves have in their paintings faraonhound or Dalmatian , who once were the favorite of Egyptian nobility .

Papyrus and bas-reliefs give us information on three types of hounds , as the Spanish Greyhound , the Italian Greyhound thumbnail or Afghanistan.

Races and care .

They were bred in courtyards built of adobe and attached to the house , the care and training of dogs were assigned to one skilled in the trade, which as it seems even had trade union.

At this time also had playgrounds for dogs, where their handlers released them so that in their games, seek and charged leather baits rabbit or antelope.

Everything appears funeral faithfully represented in frescoes found in Circa (as it was formerly Alexandria ) about 2000 BC in which you can see a pack of hunting hounds very similar to the current Greyhound .

Inventories of archaeological data and bone pieces include dogs that were once gifts nearby regions such as Libya and Nubia , in deference to the pharaoh.

A text tells us that Pharaoh Inteff II ( 2180 BC) had in his possession a small pack of dogs coming from different countries.

By 1600 BC the Molossian enter the scene and call for military use . By far, it appears that these dogs were brought by the Hyksos , as they invaded Egypt , precisely in this historical strip .

This available invading civilization much more advanced weaponry such as horses and dogs heavy and muscular. Mortuary Paintings and reliefs show a very similar to the current dogs mastiff and no documents that prove that the joined the army as attack dogs .

Like the Etruscans wore a necklace of strangulation, but in temples and palaces as in the contests they put a pinch collar ( in Rome and Pompeii called conflict or carlancas collars ) together with sawn -shaped lomeras and caps to protect them from the spears of the opponent .

As the military hunting dogs lived indoors short leashes to make them more ferocious . Only the trainers could care for and feed them.

Their diet consists mainly of deer meat or lion hunters were specialized in this type of hunting whose sole purpose was to feed these dogs , much care was matched very well because in the wars with bloody battles fiercely attacked men, horses, foot soldiers ... which put them ahead amply helping to decimate the ranks of the enemy.

As for breeding races would not be surprising that as very normal in Egyptian society pairings with degree of consanguinity , not do the same with dogs.

The medical papyri that have survived to this day have no knowledge say genetics, but really in this field ( medicine ), they were way ahead of contemporary societies , so discard physical selections , hair color ...

Many Dog experts say the Ibizan Hound, Greyhound , Saluki ... dogs are descendants of ancient Egyptians.

Luxuries For Your Dog

Whether it's because they like to pamper their dogs or just because that's your lifestyle, there are many owners who spend plenty of money on them. These luxuries are often expensive and in some cases benefit your dog and are recommended, as are take to daycare if you can not take care of yourself. Others are luxuries for fun, like buying that coat your husky really do not need to spend the winter. What your dog needs is your time, your care and your love. But who says it's wrong to give an occasional luxury? If you can afford it, go for it!

The daycare.

In day care are responsible for walking your dog two or three times a day, take care and spend time with dogs. If you want, and usually for an additional fee, they can pick up your dog and take him back home and take care of bathing, give a good haircut or a new look. The benefits of sending your dog to daycare are palpable: he is socialized with other dogs, play, eat, sleep and enjoy. Is the life you deserve. It goes so well that only rejoices arrived. It is a luxury and can be as expensive as you take your child to a private nursery. On the other hand, if you can spend time with your dog or if you go on vacation, you can be the best option for your pet.

The dog school.

A luxury I consider essential, since the benefits you get when you enroll your dog in a dog school last for many years. If you are interested in dog sports, a good place to start is at school. Your dog can learn agility, tracking and many other sports. There are basic command classes also teach you how to care for your dog, from how to potty train out to how to train him not to pull the strap. It is very important that you take your dog to a school where only use positive reinforcement. The funny thing about this is that you will give the dog a treat when he does something good, which will make him want to keep doing it.

The spa.

Dogs also deserve a good massage. In the spa be bathed with special shampoo, cut her hair and nails pampered and properly. The canine grooming is essential to the health of your dog, but the spas carry this to the next level, giving all possible pampering your dog, for a hefty price, of course.

Hes on vacation.

Although there are several types of vacations you can take with your dog, do not recommend you take him by plane unless unavoidable. By plane, depending on the breed and size, you have to be willing to invest in the cost of travel and breed restrictions. The journey may be long and stressful for your dog and it is possible that the airline will not let you on the plane. Better do a road trip, taking breaks every half hour or so. There are many hotels that accept pets. Find out before you take it.

Clothing or items chic.

There is a huge industry that produces items for dogs, mostly very nice, from Burberry coats to bags of Louis Vuitton to carry your yorkie when traveling take him. Many of these items do not need your dog, but if you like going to fashion it may be normal to want your dog to go according to your own style. Whenever you buy will not bother the dog, nor stopping play, go to the bathroom or move, spend as you like.

Dog training?, Yes or Not?

I know that there are many animal rights sticking winced when they hear the word training or trainer, who do not like anything. I am one who thinks so, it's good to train the dogs provided it is done using positive reinforcement, never punishment. A dog must obey for the sake of pleasing and not by fear. And especially being always you who adiestres your dog. That left the dog in the wrong hands would never recommend.

I have a dog training ideas without being no expert. My thing has always been ethology (study of animal behavior, their psychology) that is something that is closely related to the training. A good trainer will always be a connoisseur of canine ethology, although she has learned instinctively. Obviously, training a dog is not essential, but it is to teach some minimum standards of behavior. Some dogs, almost by themselves, learn to behave properly, to not pull on the leash, not to dig in the trash, not to eat things off the ground, not to jump on people ... others however it gets tougher. In any case, all dogs can be taught.

And if anyone in Madrid whose courses I recommend is Bocalán Foundation. I know them well and understand the positive training, are most pointer that can be found in Spain, love animals and constantly strive for people with different types of disabilities can have a furry companion to facilitate their existence.

Just opened the registration period for a dog training course of six months, so if you are interested in learning and availability, do not hesitate. I wish I had time.

Energy as Dogs Way Communication

Dogs constantly use energy to communicate. Energy is that what I call "existence", is who and what you are at every moment. Dogs do not know each other by name, but by the energy they project and the activities they share. Likewise known in humans.

As humans, we also communicate with energy, we realize it or not. And, even if we try to persuade, explain and rationalize all day, these energy signals are the only messages that will reach our dogs.

The first energy experiencing a puppy after birth is quiet-firm energy from his mother. Later, the puppy will by association to a pack leader to project the same quiet-firm energy. As followers of the pack, the dogs return a calm-submissive energy to complete the balance of the pack. It is important to understand that most dogs are born submissive, because there can be many pack leaders.

When a naturally submissive dog lives with a human who leads, try to correct the balance of the pack filling the gap left by the lack of a leader, according to their interpretation. This is how behavior problems begin.

To nurture you as the pack leader, you must project a calm-firm energy constantly. If you do not understand what I mean by quiet-firm energy, think of Oprah Winfrey. She is a calm and firm in the human world. This natural balance (quiet, firm leadership with calm-submissive behavior) promotes stability and creates a dog balanced, focused and happy.

A search and rescue dog retires after nine years of service

Blaze has been serving as a search and rescue dog for nine years. On Saturday, has retired after a long and successful career.

Blaze has been a very important part of search and rescue group in Santa Barbara County. He has participated in a total of 81 rescue missions, including 29 overseas searches. He has trained and worked with coach Juanita Smith.

"I could say I've trained Blaze, but in reality, I have trained me." "There were times in his career in which I was about to throw me back and asked him if he was sure Blaze, he looked at me and told me with his body language, 'trust me'," said Smith.

Blaze has helped in some great quests and after nine years of service he retires. A border collie puppy named Casper is being trained to replace Blaze.

On Saturday another search dog and his trainer, a member of "Search & Rescue", and sheriff's department staff gathered to pay tribute to Blaze. Now Blaze enjoys his time relaxing at home and playing with their toys.

How to cut the hair of your dog

Use a cutting machine for parts with more hair and scissors for delicate areas.

1 Start in the back.

If you go to cut the hair of your dog, start in the back. Rebájaselo using a machine rapadora always following the direction of his fur.
When you're done with the spine continues with the hind legs of your pet. Again, following the direction indicated by the hair on these extremities.

2 neck and chest.

Hold your dog's head and levántasela slightly. Use the rapadora to lower neck hair. From here and continues to trim the fur of your pet's chest.

3 Beware forelegs.

Cut the hair of your dog's front legs using the clippers. Follow the direction of the coat and watch. Your pet has a lot of sensitivity in these limbs. If necessary, use scissors.

4 face and belly.

This is the most sensitive parts of your dog, so you have to go very slowly. To trim the facial hair using scissors and be careful in areas of eyes and ears. You can reduce belly fur with rapadora, but do not apply too much pressure.

Hygiene and care for dogs in the street

The street is where our dog passes it better, but also where the biggest risks to your health. It is therefore appropriate to take some precautions.

Of course, it is not walking the dog locked in a bubble. Just have to check some details, which can be done easily without having to devote excessive attention. The walk must be a pleasurable activity for both dog and master, and if you pay attention, avoid problems. On the other hand, the following tips are easy to follow list, and eventually becoming an unconscious attitude on our part, so that they do not require a great effort. Consider:
In newly weaned pups (which usually means newly acquired) must avoid the walk and contact with other dogs until your vet has put them their first batch of vaccine, at least. It is a period in which your body has virtually no defenses.

Possible sources of disease transmission are the stools of other dogs. The urine and feces of other dogs will be as "healthy" as the dog that has occurred. Because obviously we can not know the state of that other dog, avoid risks. Put simply: remove the dog's habit of poking around.

Is difficult. Instinctively sniffs dog urine and stools, as they give very many details about the other animal. In principle, that's no problem sniffed. What must be avoided is the tendency to lick. This can be achieved in most cases "punishing" the first lick. Anyway, if your dog is male and urine smells a female in heat, no education worth and away the dog must be by force.

Worse still are the garbage. Never poke you must stop them. In this case, the risk of dogs is not greater than in the previous case, but if it is for the people. Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease that the dog is not affected, while only transports the parasites at a time of their life cycle, but then it infects people, to which can be fatal. Besides garbage, the dog can ingest parasites through feces of another infected dog, so we're back to the previous case.

In the city, the dog should always be tied. It's not just a matter of fulfilling legal ordinances (which requires). It is only if the dog will be able to act quickly tied by a tug on the leash, to take away from garbage, feces, etc., and to prevent the dog from running out if something catches your eye (a cat, another dog, a child playing ...) and avoid accidents. Recall that if the dog was loose and jumps and crosses the street and is hit, the blame will not be on anyone but us.

Instinctively, adult male dog will tend to fight with other males, and attempting to mount any female that will allow. A female, despite being less aggressive, may also want to peel with other females, and if she is in heat, a male standing heat. Only if they can control tied them immediately. For these situations occur (for some reason could not be avoided), this is what you should do:

Fight: We must take courage and try to separate them. If one of the two animals is very less, shall be submitted promptly and no further problems. But as both are dominant, the fight is "all out" and can end badly.

Monta: There is nothing to do. We have to wait for them to finish and separate themselves. The reason is that, for anatomical circumstances, the male can not leave until it's over. If you try to separate them by force is a very high risk of causing permanent damage to both the male (affecting their reproductive) and the female (from tears, to break the pelvic bone).

In a female in heat, limit the ride to the minimum time necessary. This only lasts a few days, and avoids the risk of unwanted mounts occur, not to mention that they will pursue all dogs and can end shies away.

If we take the dog to a park where there is grass and you can let loose, do not forget, when we get back home, make a small review for ticks. You have to do this too if you are playing with other dogs.
